The photobioreactors are cultivation systems (open or closed) that utilize a light source for growing of phototrophic microorganisms. These organisms use photosynthesis to generate biomass from light and carbon dioxide and include plants, macro-microalgae, cyanobacteria and purple bacteria.
The basic function of a photobioreactor is to ensure a controlled process in which it is possible to produce microbial biomass and/or metabolites.
Currently, more than 50,000 strains of phototrophic microorganisms are used, many of which are employed to produce high value substances, such as antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, products for the pharmaceutical industry, of nutrition, cosmetics.
